Funk & Soul Wednesdays – Booker T. & the MG’s

bookertmgs

There’s no better way to kick-off Funk & Soul Wednesdays than with a listen to Booker T. & the MG’s.  This instrumental band represents two of my favorite things, the South (Memphis to be exact) and Stax Records.  Booker T. & the MG’s were the originators of the Stax sound and backed many Stax artists including Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas and Wilson Pickett.  “Green Onions” was the first album ever released on the Stax label and the title song was the groups biggest hit.

U. S. Royalty

U.S. Royalty - MirrorsWashington, D.C. based rock band U.S. Royalty has a great CD out right now called Mirrors – go get it. They blend an effective mix of Fleet Foxes folk, Empire Of The Sun’s guitar pop aesthetic, and a rock undertone that keeps everything cohesive.

Up first is “Monte Carlo,” a song that reminds me a lot of current Australian rock-pop, followed by the CD’s main single “Equestrian,” which offers a much more mellow sound (a la Fleet Foxes).

Warpaint and the Psychedelic Vibe

Warpaint

For my first post on our new blog, I felt obliged to write about Warpaint.  These ladies make music that is enchanting, hypnotic and sexy all rolled up into one glorious package.  With only a self released EP and a full length out on Rough Trade Records, Warpaint is a breath of fresh West Coast air and I’m hooked.

Watch This Group: Cosmic Kids

Cosmic KidsCheck out this new single from Cosmic Kids titled “Reginald’s Groove.” Groove is right – this track packs the funk. Best when walked to down a city street.

Some Notes on the New Strokes Single

The Strokes

• It’s amazing.

• It lives up to the hype.

• It’s rather amazing upon repeat listens.

Yelle Double Feature

Yelle - Safari Disco ClubNot one, but two doses of unique pop – something the Lady Gaga’s of late can’t even begin to touch. If anything Yelle deserves a listen because of how anti-gaga she is. Not that Gaga isn’t pop – it’s just that we’ve been down the Madonna road before and she can’t keep tagging along or she’s going to nosedive. Yelle injects a fresh sense into what modern pop music should be like.

Take a double listen below of “Safari Disco Club” and newest single “Que Veux-Tu.”

The Good Natured – Be My Animal

Holy Ghost! Album Review

Such a great album. From DFA (LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Hercules & Love Affair, Juan MacClean) comes a great new addition to the Nu Disco genre. The album is set to drop on April 12th. It leaked online and is quite possibly one of my favorite albums so far this year. Check out some of the tracks from it below.
