Friends – “I’m His Girl”

I’m loving this fun song by Bushwick based Friends. The band only has 4 tracks, including a cover of 90s jam “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ’s, but they made it to the long-list for the BBC Sound Poll of 2012 as the only independently-signed artist, so Friends is just getting started. Alabama Shakes: “Hold On”

Alabama Shakes is a band name you’ll want to remember in the coming year. Lead singer Brittany Howard has a voice that will resonate on an emotional level, with 3 other band mates Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell, and Steve Johnson who round out guitar, bass, and drums. Here we have their first single, “Hold On.” It has the gumption of “Dog Days Are Over” coupled with the southern rock authenticity that makes cold nights like this a litte warmer. It will ask you for repeated listenings. That voice! The punchy vocals, coupled with the motivational hook makes me root for Brittany as much as the man upstairs is. Their EP can be found here for just $4. Check out the studio and live versions of “Hold On” below:   Follow  Read More

New Single: iamamiwhoami, “John”

More art piece than music (though the music is quite interesting, in a good way), iamamiwhoami continues to make statements with their music videos. Their point of view is often hard to grasp, and sometimes it’s not meant to be. The landscape scenes are tremendously beautiful in a utopian regard, and the design of the sets are interesting in a way that both compliments the music and also defies it as a different point of view altogether. Knowing iamamiwhoami’s history helps to understand this point of view. Check out the following videos :one, two, three, to get a quick rundown of their more successful pieces. They sometimes exceed what would be normally termed as “highbrow” in New York Magazine, but to fault them for trying something different in a landscape of pop artists that seem like basic templates gone boring is to shortchange them the equally regarded “brilliant” title as well. Just give it a minute. Fans of Bjork will appreciate it’s... Read More

Artist Profile: Brittany Bosco

Brittany Bosco is a great example of the power of collaboration, the dedication to hard work, and raw talent that is neccesary to be a huge star. Quickly building a following in Atlanta and beyond, Bosco has been in constant motion and evolution. One can hope that she makes it, as she possesses the voice and the edge to do so. New: TV On The Radio – “Nine Types of Light”

TV On The Radio have not only recently released their fifth album titled “Nine Types of Light”, but also an accompanying movie consisting of music videos for every song interwoven with interviews of New Yorkers speaking about various topics. This Brooklyn based band can do no wrong in my opinion, and this album is pure pleasure. Here is the video for “Caffeinated Consciousness” and also the full-length hour long film. Full-length film directed by Tunde Adebimpe. Follow  Read More
